Potential

Potential is often praised but rarely understood. In this reflective post, Dr. Marion Mouton explores the gap between what could be and what is, challenging leaders to create the conditions where talent, vision, and growth can thrive. True leadership sees potential—not as a compliment, but as a call to action.

Sometimes we don't realize our own potential. Why do we limit ourselves by saying I can only do this or that? We need to recognize that we have been created and equipped to do so much more than we think. Your potential for greatness is endless!
I reflect back to when I started in administration. I was sent to a campus in academic trouble, low morale, and low expectations. I set up one on one conferences with each staff member to start building relationships. I thought I clearly stated my expectations, but we know that many times what we say and what people hear are entirely different. 99.9% of any problem is a miscommunication or no communication. Being an effective communicator is one of the most critical skills that effective administrators must possess. What does effective communication look like?

  • Transparent

  • Open Two-way

  • Predictable

Transparency means sharing all relevant data with all stakeholders. Primary teachers should know the intermediate scores and intermediate teachers should know the primary scores. Students and parents should know how the school is performing overall and specifically how well their children are performing.
Open two-way communication means listening as well as speaking. It means not being afraid to listen to the people that might not agree with your decision but be willing to listen objectively and make appropriate decisions.

Predictability is a key to building trust. People should be able to predict what you as a leader will do in situations and have the autonomy to implement what they feel their leader would do.
Effective communicators can change the world. If we change our thoughts we change our words and eventually we change our destiny.
To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world!
